About Playa Grande

Sea turtles hatching in Playa Grande
Playa Grande is at the heart of a Costa Rican nature preserve, Parque Nacional Las Baulas. The beach is a permanent nesting site for leatherback turtles, so there are no hotels or man-made structures in site. The area provides a safe landing vital to the endangered turtle; female leatherbacks come ashore October through May to lay their eggs in the sand at night. The eco-friendly Costa Rican government has gone to great lengths to protect the habitat of these amazing animals. Playa Grande has therefore remained a sanctuary for both the turtles and surfers, and seasoned surfers from all over the world have christened Playa Grande as home of some of Costa Rica’s best waves.
There are several restaurants and a market all within walking distance of the surf school. Enjoy the peaceful beach and opportunities to enjoy one of the most beautiful and safe areas in Costa Rica. For shopping, dancing and night life, check out Tamarindo–a quick walk and water taxi across the estuary.
